Virtual IOP Benefits for Recovery

The Benefits of Virtual IOP for Recovery

Deciding to enter a substance abuse recovery program takes a tremendous amount of courage. But even for those who do find the courage, it can be challenging to make it to in-person programs.

If you have barriers preventing you from attending in-person sessions, a Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) allows you to take the necessary steps toward healing. This type of intensive therapy happens via digital platforms such as Zoom or FaceTime.

Wherever you have an internet connection, you can participate in a Virtual IOP, and it comes with many benefits. If you’re wondering how it works and whether it’s right for you, we have all the details you need.

Benefits of a Virtual IOP

You Can Do Virtual IOP From Anywhere

One of the biggest benefits of Virtual IOP is the ease of access. Many people don’t live close to treatment facilities. Others have transportation barriers, such as not having reliable transportation or access to public transit.

With Virtual IOP, you don’t have to worry about getting to a physical location to attend treatment. As long as you have access to a phone, tablet or some type of computer, you can receive treatment services online and from the comfort of your own home.

Virtual IOP Works With Your Schedule

Another benefit of Virtual IOP is the scheduling flexibility that comes with it. Outpatient programs often require you to attend regular in-person sessions at a specific time. For people who have jobs, people to care for and other obligations, it’s often impossible to adjust their schedules and attend treatment.

With Virtual IOP, you can work with the treatment staff to virtually attend your treatment at a time that works for you. This is especially helpful for those who want to enter substance abuse recovery but are stressed about fitting it into their schedules.

A Convenient Virtual Intake Assessment

Before entering any type of substance abuse recovery program, you’ll need to do a preliminary evaluation known as an intake assessment. Conducted by the program’s staff, this assessment gathers information about you, such as your addiction history, to determine your treatment needs.

Rather than taking the assessment in person, Virtual IOP lets you take this assessment from your home. This can help you feel more relaxed and comfortable during the evaluation. It’s also a more convenient option, as you can schedule the assessment at a time that works best for you.

Development of a Personalized Treatment Plan

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery treatment. Every person has their own set of unique struggles, values, beliefs and needs. Even though it’s not in-person, Virtual lOP delivers highly personalized treatment services that are tailored to your unique circumstances.

After learning all about you during your virtual intake assessment, your program staff will decide which kinds of services will best support your healing journey. As you move through the program, these services can be adjusted depending on your progress and evolving needs.

Is Virtual IOP Right For Me?

There are many benefits to Virtual IOP, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best treatment option for everyone. To help you decide, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I comfortable with online platforms? Virtual IOP requires you to use technology and have meaningful discussions in an online setting. If you’re comfortable participating virtually, Virtual IOP could be a good fit for you.

  • Is transportation an issue for me? If you want to enter a recovery program but can’t travel to its physical location, Virtual IOP allows you to receive treatment.

  • Do I need in-person interaction? The majority of your Virtual IOP services will be online. If you have social anxiety triggers, Virtual IOP minimizes uncomfortable in-person interactions. But if you prefer being with others physically, it may not be right for you.

Even though you won’t have in-person interactions, rest assured that Virtual IOP isn’t a lonely experience. Throughout the program, you’ll have ongoing opportunities to form meaningful relationships and receive support from your program staff and peers.

Do Virtual IOP Programs Help?

Yes, they do! While Virtual IOP isn’t for everyone, studies have shown that virtual services for substance abuse have similar self-reported outcomes to in-person programs.

Another study shows that people even prefer doing treatment virtually, with clinicians perceiving virtual services to be just as effective as in-person programs. It was also found that virtual programs had higher completion and attendance rates, along with a higher number of treatment visits.

Virtual IOP and Insurance

If your insurance provider is paying for your treatment, you’ll likely be required to come to the program’s outpatient facility from time to time. This is because your insurance may require regular toxicology screenings, which must be done in person.

If you’re facing transportation challenges, your case manager can work with you to develop a solution.
